Double Convoluted Air Springs are used in Printing Machinery
Core application: vibration isolation and damping
Challenges: There are a large number of high-speed rotating and reciprocating parts (rollers, gears, paper delivery devices, ink/foam rollers) inside the printing machine, as well as externally transmitted vibrations (ground vibrations, other equipment), which are very easy to generate vibrations. These vibrations can cause serious quality problems such as "ink bars" (ghosting), misregistration, dot deformation, and ghosting.
Solution: Double Convoluted air springs are installed in key parts such as printing units, paper delivery devices, paper collection devices, and drying devices (usually under the machine base or frame).
Advantages of installing air springs
1. Extremely low natural frequency: It can effectively isolate medium and high frequency vibrations and significantly reduce the vibration energy transmitted to the printing unit and paper.
2. Excellent damping characteristics: The air itself and the internal structure provide good damping, which can quickly attenuate vibrations and avoid resonance amplification.
3. High sensitivity: It can also respond to tiny vibrations and provide isolation effects.
4. Protect precision parts: Reduce the impact of vibration on bearings, gears, motors, and electronic components, extend service life, and reduce maintenance costs and downtime.
Machine Leveling and Height Control
Challenges: Printing machines (especially large multi-color machines) have extremely high requirements for installation level. Foundation settlement, load changes (such as paper roll replacement), and temperature changes may cause slight deformation of the machine frame, affecting the parallelism of the rollers and the uniformity of printing pressure.
Solution: Double Convoluted air springs are usually equipped with height control valves or electronic control systems.
Advantages:
Automatic/manual leveling: Regardless of how the load changes (paper rolls of different weights, operator movement), the system can automatically or manually adjust the pressure in the airbag to maintain the absolute level or constant height of the machine frame.
Compensate for foundation settlement: Can continuously compensate for slight changes in the foundation during long-term use.
Ensure roller parallelism: Accurate levelness is the basis for ensuring uniform printing pressure between rollers, which directly affects printing quality (ink color uniformity, dot reproduction).
Printing Pressure Control
Challenge: The pressure between the printing cylinders needs to be precise, stable and adjustable. Traditional mechanical adjustments may not be sensitive enough or susceptible to vibration.
Solution: In some high-end or specially designed printing presses, air springs are used directly to support the bearing seats of the impression cylinder or blanket cylinder, or to control the clutch pressure mechanism.
Advantages:
Precisely controllable pressure: By adjusting the airbag pressure, very fine, uniform and stable printing pressure control can be achieved.
Soft landing/release pressure: Reduce the impact when the cylinder contacts and separates, protecting the cylinder surface and bearings.
Dynamic compensation: The pressure can be fine-tuned during operation to adapt to different paper thicknesses or printing conditions.
Reduced Noise
Advantages: By effectively isolating the transmission of internal machine vibrations to the foundation and the surrounding environment, air springs significantly reduce the overall noise level of the printing press operation and improve the working environment.
Reduce maintenance and improve reliability
Advantages:
No friction wear: Unlike metal springs or rubber pads, there is no metal-to-metal friction contact inside the air spring, and the main wear part is the airbag (which usually has a long life).
Good fatigue resistance: High-quality rubber airbags can withstand millions of load cycles.
Self-protection: Even if the airbag ruptures accidentally, the machine will only slowly settle, which usually does not cause catastrophic consequences (compared to the sudden failure of hydraulic support).
Simplified design: It can replace complex mechanical lever or linkage leveling mechanisms.
